Props to you for remembering the guys ion the front lines of your colouring army, Josh!

I've seen you post those requests a coupel of times and seriously considered getting in touch. All that held me back was the doubt that I'd be able to do the job to the standard you required. Maybe another time...

And you're watching Gundam 0083? I love that series!

0083 FTW!

and you should give it a go sometime! i'm sorta picky with my flats, but only in that I dont like them as detailed as most flatters' work i've seen. i like my stuff simple. :)

Okie dokie - howzabout I ask a couple of questions for future reference...

By 'simple', are we talking 'broad areas of flat colour that define isolated shapes'? I've heard that some colourists are happy to accept flats where characters are flatted in a single colour from head to toe.

And are you happy to accept flatted pages that are all 'nonsense' colours? You know, where the flatter just slaps down random colours to mark out the different areas and you adjust them later?

If I can get a handle on this stuff, I may just volunteer myself next time...

personally, I like things pretty simply defined. The floors one color, walls another, sky another, that kinda thing. I know some people like to get all teched out with all the detail and it ends up just being a hassle for me because thats not how i really color.

as far as characters go, if my flatter has reference enough or knows the characters enough i have no problem with him blocking out characters accordingly. even if they're not the same colors as what i'd use. its helpful. if they dont, though, i think i do prefer my characters solidly blocked out like you said. Because then I can just select that character and fill in his color scheme without worrying about going outside the lines or what have you :P

its hard to say definitively "THIS IS WHAT IT IS" because it usually varies.

I suppose my opinion is simple is better. make the ground one color, the sky another, and if you dont know the characters color schemes/layouts then just block them each as their own color. If you do know the characters then have at it. Usually i provide my flatters with a reference on what my flats generally look like. Just gets across better what I like to work with, and most flatters i've worked with have all been pretty adaptable.

Its certainly not as difficult as this big ol' long post might give off :P

Nup. Sounds pretty straightforward.

Next time you have need of this stuff, give me a jingle. If my schedule's looking favourable, I'll definitely give it a bash.
