Not really a "process" per se, more of a before & after but. I was diggin through some old files i have and came across these!
So what this is is the Wrap-Around covers to one of the TF:Movie 07 Prequel comic books. Probably issue 1.
So what had happened was throughout this issue Don had based the pre-earth Bumblebee design off an early concept of Bumblebee's earth mode. thought it would be a neat nod i guess. It got approved and then Hasbro changed their minds and wanted him to look a bitmore like the Protoform Optimus toy they were making. And so for all of issue 1 Don had to go in and RE-DRAW every Bumblebee. The whole issue.
Sucked.
Sucked for me, although not as much lol. I was only a few pages and this cover into the issue when the change was mandated so I had to re-color some stuff as well.
Well along with changing the looks of Bumblebee's bot mode they [Hasbro] decided they didnt want too much "color"
They wanted everything to be variations of the chromes, gun-metals, etc etc look they had the protoforms goin for. I wanted to keep SOME semblance of color [man what a monochromatic mess that woulda been] in bumblebee so i gave him a yellow tinge. And the same applies for Arcee
Thats why in the comic all those characters lack color!
YEESH! That was a bad call on Hasbro's part there. :\ The original art is actually much better from a story-telling perspective.
Amazing work between you and da' Don tho. Man... Figueroa was BORN to draw robots! These perticular designs must have been intense suffering to depict on the page tho! So many parts...!
I think you two make one helluva' art-team for sure. Quite possibly the best in modern Transformer-comics.
Hasbro always know how to cock something up... the bright colours are a fundamental element of transformers, and the only way to tell most TF's apart lol and it must have been a BUGGER to re-draw BB all the way throught that issue, nightmare
I don't know what to say but I prefer them being colored like the one shown below. Truthfully, let's just say that they were colorless TFs (Cybertronian modes, ehem) until when one of them goes to earth, that's the time they get "colors". If you don't understand me, it's like adding "realism" unto it. XD And besides, it made me almost looked awful a bit when I read the Defiance (read it?) looking at all of the "colorful" peeps there LOLWHUT. Oh well, of course, it's up to the artist's freedom coz yeah take for example, if Bumblebee and Cliffjumper (imagine their pre-earth modes to be specific) were colored pale-bronze and pale-cobalt at the same time, which one of them is BBB and Cliffy??? XD So yeah, they have to be colored yellow and red respectively in order to avoid the reader's (or fan) confusion. I'm just saying like this, I ain't nerdy enough. XD
Aww and that Arcee there on the top- Was that her G1-esque colors or for some odd reasons, it's like that Japanese-exclusive repainted G1 Arcee? But still, I appreciate your work upon this.
thanks for sharing this one. woulda been interesting to see the old "what could've been" pages esp that part when Megatron tears out Bee's arm and voice box
I can understand what they were going for with asking to make everything more metal like and having less color to them since they haven't gone to earth yet to be more influenced by the colorful world that we live in as apposed to theirs which has little, if not for the metal and what ever light source is being created there, any color. But top version is just a better piece.
Amazing work between you and da' Don tho.

Awesome work. It's always cool to see the process!

So yeah this type of stuff can really bite hard
